White Peony

5 Must Have Elements of a Lovely Cottage Garden

Here’s a list of the items I have incorporated into my yard to create a cottage garden.

  1. WHITE PICKET FENCE
The white picket fence is the most essential element to a cottage garden.  It is a great backdrop to vibrant flowers and it adds an ornamental element to a yard.  It screams come check out my flowers!
  2. PERENNIAL FLOWERS
Perennial flowers are a must for cottage gardens.  Some of my favorite perennials are fragrant roses, soft peonies, bold iris, fluffy hydrangeas, and colorful tulips. Perennials are expensive to buy at nurseries but they are an investment that pays off year after year.  As your perennials start to multiply you can look to swap your flowers at local perennial swaps.  Be sure to put a variety of flowers in each bed so you have something blooming from spring to summer to fall.
  3. ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
A trellis wrapped in wisteria vines is a must have element in a cottage garden.  It makes a great focal point and is the entryway to a garden, welcoming guests to come and wonder in your garden. Pergolas help create rooms within your gardens that invite guests to stay a while.  You can also define spaces with bistro lights attached to beautiful white columns.
  4. MEANDERING PATHS
Create a wondering path for friends to journey through your garden with bricks or stones.
  5. HERBS & VEGETABLES
Herbs and vegetables add another layer of fragrance and texture to your cottage garden and of course taste!  There is nothing better than harvesting tomatoes, peppers, onions, raspberries, green beans, pumpkins and rhubarb from your garden.  I love being able to walk out by back door and pick thyme, basil, and rosemary to season by dinner.
